CASEÂ STUDY
This customer came to us with a sub-assembly and a goal to reduce costs by eliminating unnecessary components and assembly operations for the product. The challenge consisted of one injection-molded part, two commercial fasteners, and a threaded brass insert.Â
After several sessions of concurrent engineering with the customer, we were able to eliminate three components from the design, and bypass the assembly operations entirely. We then designed all the integral features that were presented by the additional components into the powder metal part. Through this, we were able to greatly reduce the customer’s overall production costs and provide them with a quality product that fit their needs.
THE ADVANTAGES OF SOLUTIONS POWDERED METAL
Since powdered metal parts are net shape, or near-net shape, they infrequently require extra operations. This avoids cost, time, and unnecessary sources of variation. This allows Sterling Sintered to be more responsive and competitively priced than other industries. Most of our parts require no machining at all. This makes it so that nearly 97% of the material used to make powdered metal parts is there in the final product.
